Boston African American National Historic Site is comprised of the largest area of pre-Civil War black owned structures in the United States.
It has roughly two dozen sites on the north face of Beacon Hill. These historic buildings were homes, businesses, schools, and churches of a thriving black community that, in the face of great opposition, fought the forces of slavery and inequality. The sites are linked by the 1.6 mile (2.5 km) Black Heritage Trail.
History comes to the life at this site, and thanks to the support from the National Park Foundation African American Experience Fund, future generations can learn the important history of African Americans for years to come.
The National Park Service (NPS) preserves natural and cultural resources in more than 400 national parks across the country for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of all.
