Shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, it is 555’ 5/8” high and made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, it took 36 years to complete. From the top viewers enjoy 30 to 40 miles visibility in clear weather. And when it was completed in 1884, it was the tallest building in the world.
