Big South Fork "Exploring your own Backyard" Program
The free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries pass through 90 miles of scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide range of natural and historic features. The area offers a broad range of recreational opportunities including camping, whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting and fishing.
Exploring Your Own Backyard - The Park Next Door converted a group campsite into an overnight educational facility to be used by Title 1 students from seven surrounding counties.
This project permitted a group of underserved youth a unique opportunity to visit and learn about the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and the National Park Service. It provided them a chance to learn about the natural world and cultural history in an alternative setting. Learning outside the classroom was reinforced by pre- and post site visit activities. The chance to engage these young people in an outdoor setting created a very powerful and resulted in long lasting learning.
