Engaging High School Students to Tell History
The focus of this Park Stewards grant is the production of a 10-minute film on 19th century agricultural production and nutritional habits at the Peirce Plantation.
The film is written and directed by high school students and uses student actors to dramatize the nutritional habits and patterns of owners and workers (including enslaved people) at the plantation in the mid-19th century.
The challenges of preserving food were many and the vagaries of the mill's production schedule and the possible dangers of foodborne disease were portrayed. The completed film is now shown at the mills visitor center to elementary school children and others visiting the site.
