At Harpers Ferry, Learning Where History Was Made

Harpers Ferry park rangers developed curricula for local students to learn history while experiencing the outdoors.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park brought school groups to the park for a ranger-led experiential program. The park developed several educational programs, including ranger-led hikes, scavenger hunts, and history searches. Upon their return to the classroom, students and teachers accessed the online resources once again and participated in a follow up classroom lesson given by park rangers.

Using an Impact Grant, the park developed grade-specific lesson plans and classroom resource materials that correspond to existing park educational programs to be used prior to, during, and after a site visit. Additionally, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park's website provides content-specific material that both the student and teacher may access to acquire information about Harpers Ferry, both past and present.
