Grand Teton Green Roof Study

Green Roof Study in Grand Teton National Park

NPF Impact Grant funded a study on green roofing alternatives for historically sod structures in Grand Teton National Park.

Grand Teton National Park partnered with the University of Pennsylvania to design and install green roofs on historic sod cabins and study the performance and success of the roofing system as a preservation treatment. Students, faculty, and park staff worked together to test this innovative approach to stewardship on one of the park's few nationally significant properties, the Bar BC Dude Ranch.

The roofing system involved grass, "geofabrics" to prevent water infiltration, and"data loggers to detect water infiltration through the roof. The ultimate goal is to examine alternative roofing structures several years and apply lessons learned to historical structural conservation elsewhere.
