Equipping Teachers With New Skill Sets

NPF helped Western Kentucky University and Mammoth Cave create a two-day teacher training program that helped further their science teaching skills.

Arming hundreds of teachers with an understanding of the relevance of Mammoth Cave National Park as a living classroom is the goal of the three-year PARK Teachers Program.

Through a two-day, inquiry program in the national park, the program team from Western Kentucky University and Mammoth Cave helped build pre-service teachers' confidence in content knowledge and teaching skills in science. Focusing on the question: what are the above and below ground connections, the pre-service teachers are led through a series of activities through which they map a mile-long section of Gothic Avenue below ground (in the cave).

As a result of this program, newly certified teachers have place-based curriculum activities already developed to implement with their elementary, middle and high school students in the national park.
