Pedaling Toward a Healthy Lifestyle at New River Gorge National River
New River Gorge National River was awarded an Active Trails grant to purchase mountain bikes and to hold a series of mountain bike trips for community youth on newly constructed hike and bike trails in the park. The park wanted to focus on a small group of youth, engaging them in multiple visits over an extended time period.
Park staff and partners conducted three mountain bike adventures for 80 underserved youth from the local community. Youth participants received safety tips, a brief introduction to the benefits of hiking and biking along park trails, and New River Gorge drawstring bags that were filled with a park brochure and trail newsletter, providing youth with information about trail locations and other park programs. Brochures on the benefits of exercise and eating healthy were also provided by the New River Health Association.
