“Let him who looks for a monument to Washington look around the United States. Your freedom, your independence, your national power, your prosperity, and your prodigious growth are a monument to him.”
— Lajos Kossuth

The Washington Monument is located near the west end of the National Mall, granting spectacular views of the National Mall, including the Lincoln Memorial, The White House, and United States Capitol Building. Memorializing our first President, George Washington, the Monument has been witness to the history that shaped our nation.

The National Monument stands as the tallest structure in Washington, D.C. Shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, it is 555’ 5/8” high and made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, it took 36 years to complete.  From the top viewers enjoy 30 to 40 miles visibility in clear weather. And when it was completed in 1884, it was the tallest building in the world.

Popular in the spring with school groups and in summer with family vacationers, the Washington Monument is a must-see for anyone visiting Washington D.C.
