Steeped in mystery, culture, and maybe even a few ghosts, Alcatraz Island is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the National Park Service. Come for the infamy, stay for the spectacular views, and walk away surprised by the rich history of the island, a history that is more than any movie can show.

Located in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations. Though most well-known as an infamous federal prison, the island also served as a Civil War fortress, active bird sanctuary, the first lighthouse on the West Coast, and the birthplace of the American Indian Red Power. Today, visitors can also enjoy the many natural features of Alcatraz Island as well—gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and exceptional views of the San Francisco Bay.
