Big Hole National Battlefield

A national memorial in Montana, Big Hole National Battlefield offers school tours, a peace trail ride, and memorials to those who died.

Combatants in a five-month conflict that came to be called the Nez Perce War of 1877 perished during the battle on August 9 and 10, 1877. Like other Indian Wars in the late 1800's, the Nez Perce War involved two very different groups with very different outlooks on land rights, civilian authority, government powers, social organization, and the responsibilities of individuals to society.

By the time the battle was over, nearly 90 members of the Nez Perce perished at the hands of American soldiers. Visitors to the area can also visit Nez Perce National Park to learn more about the story of the Nez Perce people.
