NPS Birthday Bash!

August 25, 2012NPF Blog

The National Park Foundation cordially invites you to the biggest birthday bash of the year. August 25th marks the 96th birthday of the National Park Service - a day we can all say thank you to those who protect America’s most unique and significant sites, lakeshores, and preserves. Congress established the National Park Service in 1916.  At that time, 35 national parks were to make up the national park system. Today, that number has grown to 397!

What is now called Founders Day serves as an annual reminder of the incredible gift that these national parks have to offer. We encourage you to take the time to support the parks by sending a birthday gift in honor of your favorite national park. At, everyone is encouraged to share birthday wishes through videos, photos and stories and learn how your support will help protect our parks for generations to come.

This year, for all of those who can’t make it to a park to celebrate the National Park Service’s 96th, Travel Channel will be bringing the national park birthday celebration right into America’s living rooms. Beginning at 3 pm ET on Saturday, August 25, park lovers can enjoy episodes of Best Parks Ever featuring some of America’s most iconic national parks.  Tune in and get inspired to plan your next national park adventure!
