WASHINGTON – From protecting America’s national parks, to connecting people to all they have to offer, to engaging the next generation of national park stewards, the National Park Foundation celebrates the important role corporate partners’ generous support plays in fulfilling its mission.
“Our corporate partners continue a legacy of support dating back to the very first national parks more than one hundred years ago,” said Stefanie Mathew, vice president of corporate partnerships at the National Park Foundation. “Their generosity is invaluable and integral to ensuring that these national treasures thrive today and in the future.”
Touching all aspects of the National Park Foundation’s work, corporate partnerships helped bring efforts like these to life in our national parks in 2018:
- Connecting Kids with National Park Experiences: Programs that connect young people to the nature, history, and culture preserved in our national parks foster future generations of park lovers. The National Park Foundation’s Open Outdoors for Kids program wouldn’t be possible without our corporate partners. So far, the program has brought over half a million kids to national parks, many of them for the first time.
- Creating Professional Development Opportunities for Teachers: While students have long been a focus for National Park Foundation grants, we are proud to also support the teachers responsible for educating our youth. Through the National Park Service’s Teacher-Ranger-Teacher program, educators have the opportunity to spend a summer working, and often living, in a national park. Teachers develop lesson plans and curriculum for the park to use during the school year, and they also take their learnings back to their own schools. The program focuses on connecting teachers from schools with underserved student populations in urban and rural school districts with national parks. National parks are dynamic outdoor classrooms, and programs like Teacher-Ranger-Teacher provide opportunities for educators across the country to learn about the rich resources within parks.
- Celebrating Rivers and Trails: In 2018, the National Park Foundation and the National Park Service commemorated the 50th anniversary of the National Trails and Wild & Scenic Rivers systems. Understanding the importance of national trails and wild & scenic rivers as educational and recreational sources, several National Park Foundation partners supported projects to enhance, protect, and increase access to these important places.
- Supporting New National Parks: When the National Park Foundation was founded in December 1967, there were 237 national parks. Fifty years later, there are over 400 national parks within the National Park System. New parks help to broaden the stories told by the National Park Service and enhance educational offerings for visitors of all ages. Some of our newest national parks, including Stonewall National Monument, Pullman National Monument, and Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument, received support through the generosity of our corporate partners. Understanding the need to preserve and share these pieces of American history, culture, and nature with the public, corporate partners stepped up to help.
