Erie, PA – The stage is set for Roar on the Shore® to auction legendary bike builder Arlen Ness’ contribution to its fundraising efforts for the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign.
The Roar®-commissioned motorcycle designed by Ness will be auctioned at the nationally televised Mecum Auto Auction at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2011, broadcast live on Discovery HD Theater. All proceeds from auctioning the Ness motorcycle will be donated to the national memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to honor the 40 heroes of Flight 93 who waged the first victory in the war on terror.
“We were always excited to be a part of this project, but the timing of the auction is incredible since Osama bin Laden has been found and killed by our troops,” Ness said. “This has brought the September 11, 2001, attacks on our country to the forefront and should bring momentum to the Flight 93 project.”
The candy-apple-red motorcycle is reminiscent of those Ness built years ago. “We wanted to build an ‘old school’ bike that is long and narrow and sleek and low,” he said. “The finished bike reminds me of a piece of jewelry with all of its chrome and bright and shiny red paint. It is certainly a collector’s item and what we bikers call a ‘trophy.’ ”
The Flight 93 Tribute Bike represents the reintroduction of the Ness-built classic frames that made him one of the world’s most prominent bike builders. It contains images of the planned Flight 93 memorial as well as the names of the 40 passengers and crewmembers.
The Mecum Original Spring Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana, is the world’s largest collector car auction and will showcase 2,000 vehicles. Along with muscle cars and hot rods, it will feature classic and vintage motorcycles.
“We are so pleased to partner with Mecum to unveil Arlen’s unique contribution at such a prominent venue,” said John B. Pellegrino, Sr., P.E., chairman of the Manufacturer & Business Association that sponsors Roar on the Shore®. “This spectacular motorcycle is a critical component of our fundraising for the Flight 93 memorial.”
The 2011 Roar on the Shore® motorcycle rally, the fastest growing FREE rally in the United States, will take place July 14, 15 and 16 in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. All funds raised during the rally are designated for the construction of the Flight 93 National Memorial. The event will be followed by the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride on September 10 and 11 that will converge in Shanksville for the memorial dedication on the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
