As chief of external affairs, Robert Mathias leads government relations, marketing and communications. Mathias’s portfolio includes digital strategy, advertising and brand development for the Foundation.
As a long-time communications professional, he has worked with a variety of clients in Washington and across the nation, counseling Fortune 100 companies, federal agencies, national trade associations, and leading nonprofits.
Prior to founding his own consultancy, Channel Rock Strategic Advisory, Mathias was a senior executive with Ogilvy & Mather in a career that spanned more than 20 years. He ran Ogilvy’s Washington office for 15 years and, concurrently, served as U.S. CEO for Ogilvy’s PR business for three years. Previously, Mathias ran Ogilvy’s San Francisco office.
Earlier in his career, Mathias served in President George H. W. Bush's administration as the Executive Assistant to U.S. Energy Secretary James D. Watkins and, subsequently, as Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Department of Energy.
Mathias has been inducted into both the Public Relations Society of America’s Hall of Fame and the PR News Hall of Fame. He served on the Board of Trustees of Yellowstone Forever, a friends group for Yellowstone National Park, for a decade.
Mathias holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Vermont and a Master of Business Administration from the Yale School of Management. A native of Washington, D.C., he lives in the Cleveland Park neighborhood with his wife Sarah. They have two adult daughters, Clare, a graduate of Dartmouth College, and Catie, a student at Colgate University.
