Macy’s One Good Turn™ charity shopping day, part of the “Turn Over A New Leaf” eco-awareness campaign, took place at all Macy’s stores on April 25, 2009 to raise awareness and funds for the environment through a special $5 Macy’s shopping pass. Of the total dollars raised this year, more than $2.5 million will be donated to the National Park Foundation to expand conservation education programs for children and families including “First Bloom,” a nation-wide program giving urban kids a chance to get involved with their parks and nature.

“In a single day, hundreds of thousands of Americans marched into their local Macy’s to support the environment thanks to the One Good Turn™ charity shopping day,” said Vin Cipolla, Vice Chair of the National Park Foundation. “It is the generous efforts of organizations like Macy’s that make all the difference. Their work makes it possible for us to make important strides in protecting and preserving our environment and the iconic landscapes that make up America’s National Parks.”

The One Good Turn™ charity shopping day renewed the partnership between NPF and Macy’s that raised more than $2.9 million last year – marking the single-largest fundraising event for NPF, both in dollars raised and number of donors. With support from Macy’s in 2008, NPF was able to expand its conservation education programs for kids and families including an Earth Day electronic field trip exploring the fragile Everglades National Park ecosystem that drew millions of participants through schools and community centers in all 50 states. Grants from NPF also introduced the “First Bloom” environmental education program in 8 cities including Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, Page AZ, Philadelphia, San Antonio and Washington DC.

Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park became New York City’s inaugural First Bloom site with a launch event in April 2008. At the event, then National Park Foundation Honorary Chair Mrs. Laura Bush helped to plant two First Bloom gardens designed by the Lower East Side Girls Club and the Boys Club of New York.
