Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park
In order to better connect with the surrounding Fresno community, the parks created and installed permanent and changeable wayside exhibits about national parks at Fresno Airport, which notify both visitors and locals that there are six national parks in their mountainous backyard. The parks were also able to develop 5th-grade curriculum materials, in-park wayside exhibits, and field trip itineraries as part of their outreach effort funded through the America’s Best Idea program.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks effort to invest in bilingual education have been warmly received by Spanish-speaking visitors (a majority of the citizens in neighboring counties). However, the parks’ ability to continue has been hampered by the need for professional additional translations of exhibits and handouts. Impact Grants allowed these parks to prepare and share multiple new, revised, and existing bilingual products. The parks are also beginning to work with the blind community and were able to translate some exhibits into Braille.
