Through the Resource Recovery and Protection program, NPF used restitution funds following an explosion and fire at Ashland’s St. Paul Park refinery to establish the Mississippi River Fund, the official Friends Group of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area in Minnesota. The Mississippi River Fund has used this NPF investment to improve the park for future generations by restoring 200 acres of river habitat, enabling 20,000 school children to participate in its Big River Journey educational program, planting 5,700 trees and engaging 2,000 volunteers.
