National Park Week: April 19–27, 2008
America’s national parks encompass 84 million acres of our country’s most important forests, prairies, glaciers, mountains, and seashores. To celebrate National Park Week, the National Park Foundation is working with our partners to promote and protect our precious native plants and green spaces.

Electronic Field Trip to Everglades National Park
Millions of kids will participate in an electronic field trip on Earth Day that will be broadcast live from Everglades National Park in Florida. The field trip will examine native and exotic plants in our national parks, part of the National Park Foundation’s First Bloom project, scheduled to launch in several pilot cities this year.
Hosting the “virtual’ outing that will be presented in schools across the U.S. will be the first place winner of the 2008 Junior Ranger Essay Contest sponsored by Macy’s. The young host will lead fellow students in classrooms around the world through activities centered on native plants, invasive species, habitat restoration, photosynthesis, pollination and stewardship. Students will also be able to email and phone-in questions to experts during the live broadcast.
The Electronic Field Trip is a partnership of the National Park Foundation, Macy’s, and Ball State University with cooperation from the National Park Service, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the Boys & Girls Clubs.
First Bloom Kids Get Their Hands Dirty
During National Park Week, First Bloom kids will get their hands dirty planting gardens at the Battery Conservancy in downtown New York and at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park near Austin, TX. These gardens will be viewed by thousands of park visitors and will be a testament to the vision of First Lady Laura Bush and the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson.
The First Bloom project invites city kids to get their hands dirty. Children will learn how to protect fragile ecosystems by planting native species in our national parks and how to create and tend gardens in their own neighborhoods. The First Bloom project will plant the seeds for a stronger conservation ethic in our country, beginning with our youngest citizens.
