The Highest and Lowest

Visited Death Valley National Park, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park on August 3, 2008

My wife and I arrived at the summit of Telescope Peak, the highest point in Death Valley National Park, at about 11:30 A.M.   To the east, we expected to see Badwater, the lowest point in the western hemisphere below us, and were not disappointed as we had a spectacular view of the salt flats and the valley. We were also enjoying the cool temperature as it was 67 degrees with a light breeze, knowing that it was at least 40 degrees hotter at Badwater. We were there shortly after sunrise the previous morning and it was 95 degrees.

To the west, we had a stunning view of the Sierra Nevadas, 80 miles distant, including Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States.

It was a breathtaking moment for us as we took in the beauty and serenity of two National Parks. We were standing one place and had the opportunity to see two geographic icons of our park system.
