Get moving today! Grab your best pair of running shoes, fill up your water bottles and head out to your favorite national park to celebrate National Get Outdoors Day. Today, in honor of National Get Outdoors Day, national parks will be offering FREE admission as well as fun events that are sure to make your outing worthwhile.
Launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to address the problem of childhood obesity across America, the Let’s Move campaign is active sponsor of National Get Outdoors Day. Specifically, Let’s Move Outside, focuses on motivating children to engage in physical activity in a fun and enjoyable manner. Studies have shown that children who participate in physical activity have a higher physical and mental health than those who do not.
Here are a few National Get Outdoors Day events that are occurring in your local national park:
WASHINGTON – Fort Vancouver National Historic Site – With over 50 booths scattered among the park, come to Fort Vancouver to participate in climbing, fishing, archery, and even get the opportunity to show your competitive side with a game of Frisbee golf.
CALIFORNIA – Lassen Volcanic National Park – Enjoy the expected 70 degree California weather this weekend by getting to the park before 10:00 am to participate in a one-hour tour of the Manzanita Lake. This tour is followed by ranger-led hike from to the beautiful Mill Creek Falls at 2:00 pm.
TEXAS- Padre Island National Seashore – Participate in some active summer events at Padre Island this Saturday. These activities include sand castle sculpting lessons and long walks that overlook the Gulf of Mexico.
NEW JERSEY– Morristown National Historical Park – Spend the day at Morristown through participating on a roundtrip hike with a local Park Ranger and competing in family-style games that take on a 18th century twist.
