Last week, First Lady Michele Obama’s new book about the White House garden (also in a national park), American Grown, hit the stands. We are especially excited as proceeds from the book will go to the National Park Foundation. The book tells stories of not only the First Lady’s experiences with gardening, but it also highlights community gardens across the nation. Divided into four sections representing each season, the book includes bright photos of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with recipes and helpful hints.
In her continuing efforts to encourage active youth and focus on eating natural foods, the First Lady promotes gardening as a pathway to healthier lives and outdoor activity. American Grown will go to support programs in the national parks that support healthy eating and gardening, as well as programs that provide young people the opportunity to experience our national parks. Funds will also support the continued care of the White House Kitchen Garden on the South Lawn of the White House, one of the 397 parks in the national park system.
Already a best seller in the “Gardening & Horticulture” category on Amazon.com, American Grown is sure to harvest in all of us a desire for fresher eating and a greater understanding of and appreciation for nature.
