Vice President of Corporate Partnerships
Executive Summary
In 1872 America did something unprecedented in the world. We set aside more than one million acres of wilderness for the benefit and enjoyment of the American people. Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan’s recent documentary called it “America’s Best Idea.” Proclaiming Yellowstone our first national park marked the beginning of a public movement for conservation and preservation that endures today and has resulted in the establishment of nearly 400 national park sites.
For more than 100 years, citizen involvement and private philanthropy have helped to improve, preserve and protect America’s National Parks. The National Park Foundation has sustained this legacy of private philanthropy for almost forty years. We are a small organization with a big mandate. Chartered by Congress as the only national charitable partner of America’s National Parks, our mission is to strengthen the enduring connection between the American people and their National Parks by raising private funds, making strategic grants, creating innovative partnerships and increasing public awareness.
As Vice President of Corporate Partnerships you will develop effective strategies to engage new corporate relationships and increase financial support of our programs, parks and events. With the start of the new fiscal (July 1-June 30), you will work closely with the SVP of Development to firm up details in the newly designed strategic fundraising plan and ramp up corporate funding (our corporate goal is $4.9MM for fiscal year 2011). You will evaluate existing relationships, reenergize those that need renewed attention, and pursue new strategic partnerships, including Fortune 500 companies. You will have lots of opportunities – historically, it’s been common for corporations to approach us to underwrite a particular program or develop a specific opportunity for cause marketing. However, this year is designed for the team to be more pro-active in securing corporate partners. While we have a list of identified prospects, we will expect you bring new ideas to the table on how we can engage and introduce new corporations to what the Foundation is doing.
Working at NFP, you will be at the intersection of powerful trends in our society: more Americans are discovering and supporting their parks than ever before; corporate stewards are embracing and advancing causes that are “green” and that are linked to our American heritage; and across the nation there is a renewed focus on education, wellness, and environmental awareness. NFP sponsors a range of programs, including premier community-focused annual events, such as the White House Easter Egg Roll and the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and youth programs such as First Bloom, Electronic Field Trips, Parks Climate Challenge, and the Flight 93 National Memorial.
As VP of Corporate Partnerships, you will report directly to the SVP of Development and will work closely with the CEO and select Board members to develop new opportunities. You will work within a development staff of 11 and you will have one direct report (Director of Corporate Partnerships). You will have a great marketing and communications department and some shared administrative support to help you. You will partner with other departments to ensure programs and campaigns are on message and appropriately coordinated with the National Park Service and Department of Interior. You will develop proposals, deliver presentations and work in collaboration with key leadership as you engage Brand Managers, Directors of Community Affairs, and other C-level executives. We will look to you to steward our corporate partnerships and to increase corporate funding annually.
Key Responsibilities: Vice President of Corporate Partnerships
In this role you will:
- Develop effective strategies to strengthen current corporate partnerships and develop (and significantly expand) new corporate relationships.
- Work with key board members to identify contacts for potential corporate partners. Provide leadership and direction to guide them through the fundraising process.
- Manage accounts, prospect and cold call. Get new prospects introduced to what we’re doing.
- Develop a plan for NPF to increase partnerships with outdoor retailers and other related retailers. Implement a strategy that outlines a successful structure for years to come.
- Ramp up funding. Work to increase funding on the corporate platform through the initiation of programs such as licensing, cause-related marketing, event/program sponsorship, and promotional campaigns.
- Partner with Marketing and Communications to identify opportunities to drive visibility and revenue generation.
- Develop metrics and budgets for new campaigns and initiatives.
- Provide regular progress reports to the SVP of Development. Make recommendations based on campaign successes.
- Ensure that corporate campaigns conform to National Park Service guidelines.
- Work within the development department to ensure the overall organizational goals are being met.
- As we near the 100th anniversary of the National Park System in 2016, you will also be responsible for working with the leadership team to develop campaigns leading up to, and in support of, the 2016 Centennial.
Essential Experience, Skills and Competencies of the Vice President of Corporate Partnerships
We will want you to demonstrate the following:
- At least 10 years experience in business development / corporate fundraising.
- Five or more years of supervisory and organizational leadership.
- Ability to absorb new information quickly and accurately; the ability to understand its strategic implications; and the ability to integrate that knowledge into new business.
- Strong working knowledge of private sector development and public policy.
- Experience in developing a budget, tracking and measuring results.
- Project management skills, including developing and managing campaigns and programs.
- Experience in both restricted and unrestricted fundraising techniques.
- Experience with donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships across all levels of the organizations and with a broad spectrum of stakeholders.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs (including Outlook, Word, Excel) and, ideally, membership databases such as Raiser’s Edge and GiftWorks.
- Superior written and verbal communication.
- Strong presentation skills – confidence delivering proposals to C-level executives and above.
- Baccalaureate or higher degree or equivalent experience.
- Travel required – approximately 35% (this will grow as your prospect relationships grow).
Attributes of a successful Vice President of Corporate Partnerships
- Creative, with a “can-do” attitude: You are energized by the challenge of building on-going successful fundraising campaigns. You understand the mission, you think about what’s possible and you implement solutions.
- Politically astute: You have good judgment and a thoughtful approach. You are able to understand, respect, and appreciate the challenges and constraints that colleagues, board members and corporations may be facing, and you are able to confidently guide and direct them.
- Team Player: You work well at all levels within an organization, with internal and external constituents alike. You naturally bring out the best in people as you build trust and buy-in from both colleagues and donors.
- Excellent at building relationships: You share your insights, seek out other opinions, and listen to the needs and concerns of others. You are known for your poise, tact and diplomacy.
- Highly organized: You know what’s expected of you and you plan carefully to ensure your results. You have command of both the process and the details, and you get it right the first time.
- Flexible: You are able to easily shift gears, reprioritize, and stay focused on key priorities.
- Champion for the mission: You understand the big picture, and easily translate our objectives into community impact.
What’s Attractive to the Right Candidate?
- You, and your work, are important to us. Our successes in development set the stage for increasing and continued funding growth in subsequent years.
- Your work has a lasting impact. You will make a direct and immediate impact on conservation, culture, preservation, recreation, education, stewardship, and volunteerism – preserving our national treasures for centuries to come.
- Your work matters to all Americans. When you call donors and say you are calling from the National Park Foundation, donors take your call, and take the meeting – you will have access.
- You will go places and see things not open to the public. You can invite donors on private park ranger guided tours of our national treasures.
- You will like who you work with - passionate and committed colleagues who are building an open, collaborative, high-growth culture, where innovation and new ideas are welcomed.
- You will be working on a team where everyone works together so we can win together. We all carry a specific portfolio, and we work together as a team to meet our collective goals.
- You will enjoy a great downtown location, a competitive salary and a competitive benefits package.

About Us
The National Park Foundation was established in 1967 by congressional charter with support from Lady Bird Johnson and an initial $1 million contribution from Laurance Rockefeller. NPF seeks to sustain the legacy of philanthropy and strengthen the connection between the American people and their National Parks by raising private funds, making strategic grants, creating innovative partnerships and increasing public awareness.
The National Park Foundation’s work is as diverse as it is compelling. We are the lead fundraising partner of the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign, a national capital campaign to build a memorial honoring the passengers and crewmembers of United Airlines Flight 93 and their heroic and selfless acts on September 11, 2001. Through the African American Experience Fund, the National Park Foundation connects Americans from all walks of life to the considerable contributions of African Americans throughout our country’s history.
The National Park Foundations collaborates with corporate partners to create the First Bloom youth program which helps children from Boys and Girls Clubs learn how to protect fragile ecosystems in their national parks by planting native plants and by designing, planting, and maintaining gardens in their neighborhoods. We are also excited to be able to fund youth engagement programs that allow kids to explore their national parks with their families and become Junior Rangers. Alternatively, at home kids can go online and become WebRangers, and from their classrooms they can electronically explore the mysteries of the national parks through the Electronic Field Trip Program.
Working at the National Park Foundation, you will be at the intersection of powerful trends in our society: more Americans are discovering and supporting their parks than ever before; corporate stewards are embracing and advancing causes that are “green” and that are linked to our American heritage; and across the nation there is a renewed focus on public service, education, health and fitness, and environmental awareness. We are passionate about our mission, mandated in the charter creating our organization, that is to support the efforts of national parks and preserving them for the enjoyment current and future generations.
What’s Attractive to the Right Candidate?
- You, and your work, are important to us. Communicating about the parks, and fundraising to support them, is at the very center of our mission. - You will enjoy a great downtown location, a competitive salary and a competitive benefits package.
